The Montrealer
An interesting art exhibit was held in the fall of 2017 at the Maison de la Culture du Plateau Mont-Royal called Le Montrealer. Several Montreal illustrators and comic artists were tasked with designing magazine covers in the same style as that of The New Yorker, which is well-known for its comic art covers since the 1920s.
This exhibit inspired us at Arcmtl to dig up at our archive centre our copies of the original The Montrealer magazine. Published from the 1920s to the late 60s or early 70s, The Montrealer was one of those now all-but-extinct local general interest magazines (think Toronto Life or New York Magazine) that is more style and fluff than substance but still indicative of what was perceived as what the mainstream Anglophone population wanted to read about that month.
Arcmtl had already posted one issue of The Montrealer online here, but very little information about this magazine is available anywhere. If you have copies of The Montrealer or know anyone who wrote or illustrated or worked for that magazine, please get in touch, we’d love to be able to share more information about this long-running but almost forgotten publication. Arcmtl can be contacted through the Contact menu item above.
Here is a selection of cover images from The Montrealer.
