Art and the Book
ARCMTL is proud to unveil the programme for its newest project, Volume 1 MTL : an Art Book Fair prefaced with a week full of presentations, workshops and discussions about artists’ books and books on art. This programme invites the curious to discover places and people that are at the core of artists’ book production in Montreal, and take in presentations of recent projects in artists’ studios or artist-run centres. Other activities let you discover the rich heritage of artists’ books in Quebec through visits to various archives and special collections.
Below is the full programme of activities. Note that all activities are free except for the professional workshop at Oboro on October 16.

Volume 1 MTL Art Book Fair

More than 50 publishers, artists and collectives will be presenting and selling recent publications and artists’ books, not to be missed! See the Facebook event here! FYI, the SAT is a fully accessible space equipped with non-gendered accessible washrooms. However, entry is limited to adults 18 years and over — but their new café adjacent to the main Volume 1 MTL space and the restaurant on the third floor are accessible to all ages.

PRESENTATION / DISCUSSION – Innovating the artists’ book @ Concordia

A presentation of the FARR by its director, Sasha Pozzolo. The FARR is a valuable resource to anyone wanting to learn more about artists’ books and has a large number of books on art available for consultation.
Presentation of the Centre for Expanded Poetics. Nathan Brown, director, will discuss the Centre’s interdisciplinary approach to poetic form and several of its collaborative projects, including the small press imprint DOCUMENTS, risograph print making, and 3D modelling of poetic texts.
Presentation of the « Boundless Dialogues » project by artist and arts instructor Jenny Lin. The project, initiated by Concordia Print Media, invited Studio Arts students to create an artist’s book work in response to projects by master bookbinder Jacques Fournier (Éditions Roselin).

Artexte, the reputable documentation centre of contemporary art in Montreal, presents a special edition of Artexte on Tap, an animated and informal evening around a selection of artists’ books in the company of some of the artists themselves, and alcohol! Artexte’s librarians will propose a diversified selection of current and historical artists’ book treasures as avenues for discovery, reflection, and informal conversation on the nature of the artists’ book as an artistic medium.

Presentation of the Atelier Circulaire’s digital print laboratory and the Riso-Boto project, with Thomas Miau (Atelier Circulaire), Louis Rastelli (Distroboto). The various digital presses as well as traditional equipment such as a Risograph press will be presented alongside various examples of artists’ books printed with varied techniques.
Presentation : Applications of augmented reality in art book publishing, Harley Smart, publisher, Anteism. Anteism is a pioneer in the production of books on art that integrate augmented reality. Come discover one of the most exciting developments for the future of art book publishing!

A visit to the cooperative print studio Co-op Coup d’Griffe, including a presentation of a recent artist’s book by the artist, Antoine Gautier.
A presentation and exhibit of the first artists’ books created in Quebec, including several very rare creations by Roland Giguère. Presented by the collector Gaetan Dostie, founder of the Médiathèque Littéraire Gaétan Dostie.

PRESENTATION/ DISCUSSION – PICA, Dare-Dare and La Chose Imprimée @ UQAM

A presentation about the 10th anniversary of PICA, a collective magazine published by students of the École de design at UQAM.
An overview of the unique and original creation process and the conservation of artists’ books at the Dare-Dare artist-run centre, by its coordinator, Martin Dufrasne.
A presentation of the project, « La Chose Imprimée », by Judith Poirier, professor at the École de Design at UQAM, a project in which the book is used as a platform for research and experimentation in design.
