It’s time once again for Montreal’s own Home Movie Day!

Home Movie Days are held in the fall in many cities around the world, both to promote and to celebrate the legacy of amateur and home-made films from the 20th century.

Over the course of an afternoon, the public is invited to bring out their own home movies on formats such as 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm film or on VHS or other more recent formats. Various experts at the event will be able to give advice on the condition of the films, how they can be safely played or digitized.

There will be projections of home movies with film projectors all afternoon, featuring films showing Montreal neighborhoods from the 20th century.

Home Movie Day Montreal 2024 is a collaboration between ARCMTL, Vidéomédia and the Center for Home Movies.

ARCMTL is now regularly adding digitized home movies found in Montreal on a Youtube playlist for ephemeral films here. If you have any old film reels, VHS or beta or other video formats that you think may have Montreal-area or Quebec home movies on them and you don’t know how to transfer them or want to donate them, you can contact us by email.

ARCMTL and the Musée des ondes Emile Berliner joined forces in November 2020 for the first-ever web-streamed Montreal edition of Basement Tapes Day, a showcase of found sounds and vintage audio formats! View the event on its Youtube playlist here, with subtitles available in English or French.

Home Movie Day Montreal is organized by Arcmtl and its partners: the Center for Home Movies, Triana Media the Cinémathèque québécoise, Les Productions de la Ruelle Vidéomédia  and the Groupe de recherche sur le cinéma éducatif, industriel et de commande canadien.
